Yesterday, we learned that if we should happen to fall into a crevass, not only do they not have the equipment to save you, they will not even try! How cool and yet a little scarey is that? I can tell you it keeps us fully tuned in to the safety briefings. I stepped briefly off the trail today and sank to my knees in snow. It was a bit of a wakeup call to the hazards all around us. Our first landing today has everyone sharing photos and experiences from our day on the ice. Early tomorrow morning we are going to attemp to cross the Antarctic Sound. If we are able, we will be the first ship this season to cross the Sound. Our ship is faster and smaller than any other in Antarctica so the crew tells us we have a good chance. They tell us we will see some spectacular ice if we can get in. Of course there is the possibility that it will be too icey to cross and will have to turn back. It is definitely feeling like quite the adventure. We have no set itinerary. The crew plans as we go based on current conditions, but they are so excited about the possibiity of crossing the Sound, it must be something good. I have many more pictures to post, but right now I am being penalized one shot for every five minutes I am late to the bar. Gonna have to go soon.

All Ashore Who's Going Ashore! The crew heads out to prepare the landing site.

Amazing Landscape on Half Moon Island

Can you spot the penguins? They are all sitting on eggs in this shot. Some male, some female, they take turns while the other goes to feed.

Have you ever seen anything like this?
